Scott & Kat {Sneak Peek}

Scott and Kat are two of the most widly fun people I know. Their taste in music, wine, food, and having a dang good time made for the most flawless and fancy free wedding. In an unreal setting, a private estate near Santa Barbara, this rustic chic event was one for the books. From the 360 view to the oyster bar to the hand picked music selection — no detail was spared. What a day to capture!

Tina Pruitt (@TinaPruitt)August 26, 2013 - 11:53 am

Karen,

Your photography is exquisite and I love the details you share with us on the celebration. I look forward to future posts when you give us even more insight into these amazing occasions you capture so eloquently!

xo, Tina

KarenAugust 26, 2013 - 12:03 pm

@Tina Pruitt love having you here and LOVE all the brilliant things you’re creating in the world. Means so much to have you and our community in my world. Get big inspiration from you all! xo

MeganAugust 26, 2013 - 6:17 pm

LOVE these photos! It makes me want to see more! I love your style. (and it makes me what to go look at my wedding photos and relive the day!)

BiancaAugust 27, 2013 - 9:42 am

Your photos are always so beautiful and dreamy, Karen! Love em to pieces :) The photo you took with Scott kissing Kat’s forehead: so cute!

KarenAugust 27, 2013 - 10:45 am

@Megan I love that it makes you want to look at your own wedding photos! That’s awesome. It’s funny, shooting this wedding after getting married myself and being in front of the camera was a wild new perspective. But, as always, I cried and danced and laughed from start to finish. Weddings grab at my heart like no other.

KarenAugust 27, 2013 - 10:46 am

@Bianca Ahhh, thank you!!! I love that you said “dreamy.” That means a lot! It’s exactly what I would hope to capture! All of life is a dream; a miracle; a Dr. Seuss story. So that might just be the best observation ever. THANK YOU!

ReneeAugust 27, 2013 - 4:56 pm

Karen, What a beautiful capture of a milestone event! I really enjoy how you showcase their spirit and love in your photography.

ChristineAugust 27, 2013 - 8:13 pm

Beautifil pictures from what must have been a wonderful wedding. You must have a great job, capturing all that happiness. Looking forward to see more :-)

sarah yostAugust 28, 2013 - 3:13 pm

I love your photography. It’s always so beautiful without the cheesy elements I see so often in wedding photography. That wedding looks amazing.

LoraleeAugust 28, 2013 - 4:24 pm

Always adore it when you share your photos. Gorgeous wedding shots, once again!

KarenAugust 28, 2013 - 7:28 pm

@Renee, thrilled to have you here! Keep coming back. @Christine you’re so right! I don’t think there’s been a wedding yet that I haven’t cried at. I usually totally lose it when we’re all dancing on the dance floor and I’m capturing the friends and guests getting down. Makes me feel really aware of the happiest moments in life. @Sarah, yup we aim for no cheesy elements here! I love photos that are real and stylish. Nothing too proppy or posed. @Loralee, you’re awesome! Thanks for all the love. ; )

KarenAugust 28, 2013 - 7:31 pm

Renee, psyched to have you here! Thanks for stopping by. Christine, I do! Can’t think of a single wedding that I haven’t cried at. I always lose it when everyone’s getting down on the dance floor and I’m somewhere squished in the middle trying to dance and capture it all. Makes me feel so alive and so acutely aware of the fragility of life. Sarah, yes, to no wedding cheesiness! Agreed. That’s why we stay away from too many cutesy poses and props. Try and always go for stylish editorial looks AND real fly on the wall, intimate, moments. That’s the balance! Loralee, you’re awesome. Thnx for the love!

LisbethNovember 13, 2013 - 3:26 pm

I cannot believe I just read every single word of that … twice! I have never had someone write the exact thoughts in my head like that before. You totally nailed my exact experience. I am totally at the crossroads you talked about and I’ve been too scared and too stuck to get out my own way. It feels like I’ve tried everything but really I’ve just tried different verisons of the same thing over and over. Emailing you. Do you work ongoing or is it a single session?

KarenNovember 13, 2013 - 7:14 pm

Lisbeth, big thanks for this! Happy to have you here! To create big things, to make real change, takes an immersion program working together in an ongoing weekly series {a minimum of 6 weeks is required and many clients work 8-12weeks}. I do, very occasionally, offer a limited number of consulting sessions in 90min one-offs but these are designed for those who have already coached with me and are simply needing a quickie “How To” reminder of something already worked on earlier. Behavioral change, longterm visioning, short term strategies, values based prioritizing, and intuitive decision making doesn’t happen over night. The more you put in, the more you get out, and the results can be far greater than anything you could possibly imagine. Talk soon!

Tim + Karen {Fruitful Films Bohemian Backyard Wedding}

So, a few months ago, the craziest thing happened. I got hitched! Yup, this wedding photographer was at long last the gal in white … and glittery gold DIY slippers, might I add.

Thanks to Style Me Pretty for publishing our Bohemian Backyard Wedding in Venice Beach, Tim + Karen.

Our Bohemian Backyard Bash in sunny Venice, CA was about as eclectic and as artsy as our many loved ones. The room was full of award winning photographers, filmmakers, producers, dancers, actors, screen writers, musicians, journalists, designers, and agents. It only made sense then that we rented an Airstream, borrowed a side car, made cardboard “Choose Love” signs, sourced bongos & cowbells & sparklers, and asked this motley crew of creatives to parade from the ceremony at Big Red Sun {a landscape and design studio on Rose Avenue} to our family’s private home for a Food Truck and dancing reception.

Thank you to all of friends, family, and vendors for making this once in a lifetime experience so completely us. And big fat huge extra Thank You to Fruitful Films for their time and talents.

Watch below, check out more of the published images on SMP, and share these both with any bride-to-be friends. xo

I can’t remember ever watching a wedding highlight video … ever … without eye rolling or stopping it 30 seconds in. You two are so real and this is done with so much meaning. I love the theme that you chose and the sentiment. Totally cried. Just like amazing. Sigh.

Hi Karen. I signed up for your backstage pass and am interested in learning more about your coaching? I’m not a photographer but a graphic designer. I don’t want to keep doing contract jobs for companies I don’t care about. Would love to know how to transition to working with clients like you or others in lifestyle or fashion. Would coaching help me?

KarenDecember 17, 2012 - 9:50 pm

Hi Lucinda,

Absolutely coaching would help you!!! Until I worked with someone, it was hard to lock down exactly WHO my ideal clients/friends were to work with. I didn’t want to photograph just anyone anymore. And if this is what you’re also experiencing, then I’ve definitely been there and I’m happy to share several strategies for transitioning out of that exhausting cycle. Reach out via my contact form and we can talk about different options : )

The Other Shore World Premiere SXSW {Diana Nyad}

I am BEYOND thrilled to announce that our labor of love, the documentary feature film The Other Shore, will have its World Premiere at SXSW film  festival this 2013.

Diana Nyad, 63, adjusts her cap moments before making her attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida, nonstop. Photography ©Karen Christensen

Less than 2% of all films submitted get into this prestigious {and RAD} film festival. So you can imagine our elation.

We’re kicking off the good news with the launch of the official movie FB page and Twitter profile. Come “LIKE” and Follow us for a behind the scenes look at the film team PLUS interactions with Diana AND production stills with updates on upcoming screenings rolling out this year! We’re just getting started so hop in and know there’s loads to come.

Had it not been for the tireless storytelling of Director, Timothy Wheeler, the phenomenal work of our Producers Kevin Abrams and Patrick Weir of Ketchum Labs, alongside Bristol Baughan and Erin Heidenreich of Uprise, the genius editing of Eric Meyerson, Sam Citron and Claire Didier, the gorgeous compositions by Paul Brill, and the courageous spirit of Diana Nyad’s epic journey — this film would not have been possible. There are countless people to thank. But for now, just trust me when I say that this team has every right to celebrate. As for me, I’m hugely grateful to have been a small part of this big story, photographing and co-producing this compelling examination of the human will.

Until we see you at SXSW, throw us a high five over here …

A Giving Chance: Win a FREE mini photo shoot

For those of you who’ve been around these parts, or who’ve become a friend through a photo shoot or coaching, you know how *hugely* hugely *hugely* important women’s advocacy is to me. It’s really what drives everything I try to do and create, both on + off camera.

So when fellow creative entrepreneur, Katrina Padron, told me what she wanted to do to help support women {and moms} in poverty, I was honored to do whatever I could to help. Learn the story behind the story about the personal experience that inspired Katrina to give back in such a big way, bringing together the support of the biggest names in online business for A Giving Chance.

A Giving Chance is an online drawing, with every dollar raised going to Compassion International’s Child Survival Program. Why? Because every day 1500 women die from complications in pregnancy and 10,000 newborns die within a month of birth, each and every day. With the necessary resources these tragedies could easily be prevented. It’s time we come together for women’s maternal health.

Katrina is sponsoring a Dream Team Business Makeover, with all entry donations going to Compassion International’ Child Survival Program which last year helped 25,000 babies stay alive. The contest will be celebrated with 2 winners receiving a Dream Team Business Makeover from 19 brilliant entrepreneurs.  The business makeover team includes:

:: online powerhouse Copyblogger.com,
:: well known author and speaker Jonathon Fields,
:: Creating Fame founder Laura Roeder,
:: a Mini Editorial Branding Photo Shoot {from moi},
:: a new website,
:: fresh copy,
:: saavvy social media campaigns,
:: pr strategy,
:: one-on-one consulting with the biggest names in the industry,
:: copies of Seth Godin’s Bootstrappers Bible and What Matters Now,
:: PLUS so much more goodness {like, if you win so does your friend}!

The drawing begins now and runs through Christmas Eve with the winners being announced on Christmas Day. So hurry on over to A Giving Chance to help support a mom in need and enter to win a whole new business this 2013. Make this next year not only the best for you but for a mom in need.

I personally began a cause in 2012 which has not taken off as, I would have liked to my goal in 2013 is to bring it to light and hopefully contribute to the organization, I started it for as well as create an event and add other charitable causes. I am letting go off procrastination in 2013 it’s a BIG GORILLA on my back & it’s time to stop it from weighing me down.

You are doing an amazing job and I am definitely a fan! You go girl!

Heather Stewart – Indie Bohemian Vintage Photography

Talent to Watch: Heather Stewart

Today’s post is an extra special treat for me. It highlights everything I swoon and strive for in my own artist life:

:: vulnerability, strength, and raw unapologetic truth,
:: indie bohemian style, eclectic global details, texture,
:: vision boards, handwritten journals, postcards, passports,
:: wide open spaces, intimate home decor, nature and industry,
:: family stories, vintage records, old boots, heirloom photos.

AND this sneak showcases one of my absolute favorite soul’s on the planet. Meet my dear friend + extraordinary talent, singer songwriter Heather Stewart.

Not only does she effortlessly house a voice the likes of Brandi Carlile + Bonnie Raitt, but she may be the funniest and most charismatic person I know. A wicked combination of reflective, thoughtful, soul and untethered, wild, spirit — she’s that one friend we’d all invite to our private desert island.

I was beyond stoked to photograph the artwork for her upcoming “What It Is” album as well as her upcoming website’s rebrand. Like her herself, it’ll make you smile and sigh in awe. It’s with pure glee that I share this sneak of some of our favs, photographed near Melrose and near Venice, California.

Someone on Facebook asked me last night about the jean jacket. I think her words were she’s “lusting” after it! Ha, ha! Funny thing is that’s actually pulled from my own closet. Bought it at one of my favorite little Marina Del Rey boutiques called Irene’s Story. Heather tried to steal it from me but I was like “hands off chica.” ; )

Vintage Wedding Photography {Photo Booth}

Life with The Hot Dreadman {aka my man}.

This past weekend, Dreads and I took a meditative long drive up the coast to visit our favorite Berkeley, CA crew. Our friends, Jaime + Jordan, shared their vows in an intimate garden wedding which struck such a chord with all of us, leaving me laughing through my tears. In the midst of shameless reception dance-offs, we all piled into the photo booth and got a little ca-razy. Here’s a sneak of the madness.

The Knotty Bride, Backyard Vintage Wedding, Ryan Gosling!

Truth be told — getting published on the top wedding blog, The Knotty Bride, is pretty much bizbomb.

Having a Ryan Gosling music video as its soundtrack? Priceless.

Caine’s Arcade 2: Global Cardboard Challenge & Imagination Foundation

CBS NEWS

Kids + Cardboard Will Change The World

Photographer Karen Christensen of The Legacy Boutique, who partners with children and women centered charities, was proud to be one of the Producers on Caine's Arcade 2 which support Creative Entrepreneurship and Imagination in kids. CBS News, TIME Kids Magazine, Diane Sawyer, and over 1 million views on You Tube.

It’s no secret. Since I was 19 years old, fresh off the plane from NH, I’ve been blessed to work on so many incredible creative projects here in Los Angeles.

Producing for the Caine’s Arcade followup film, alongside the ridiculously talented producers/writers/directors Erin Heidenreich and Bristol Baughan of Uprise, has been no exception. Launching the Imagination Foundation and inviting the world out for a Global Cardboard Challenge this October 6th, I am thrilled to share with you Director Nirvan Mullick’s followup film. Featured on CBS News, The Jeff Probst Show, TIME Kids, and with OVER 1 million views — it’s kinda a big deal.

This film highlights all the magical opportunity that was born these past 5 months from the imagination of a 9-year-old boy, Caine, who built an elaborate cardboard arcade in his father’s East LA auto parts shop. From Jack Black, to LL Cool J, to Justin Timberlake, to Jessica Alba, to Annie Lennox, to Diane Sawyer, to the Caan Film Festival in France, to rocket scientist Rob Manning — the response has been HUGE!

DO THIS NOW:
:: Share this with your friends + Come out to play next month on Oct 6th!
:: Leave a comment + tell me:

  • What memories does this bring up from YOUR childhood?
  • Do YOU think creative entrepreneurship will change the world?
  • Who inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in YOU?

And now … Caine’s Arcade 2! {Reload the page if video doesn’t appear}

Good site you’ve got here.. It’s hard to find quality writing like yours nowadays.
I really appreciate people like you! Take care!!

I think that what you composed made a lot of sense. But, consider this, what if
you composed a catchier title? I am not saying your information is not good,
but what if you added a title that makes people want more?

I mean Caine

Beach Photography Los Angeles {Dr. Jennifer Chrisman}

Love Your Truth. The Good, Bad, & Ugly.

We’ve all been there.

:: We hear the whisper,
:: We feel the pull,
:: We see the writing on the wall.

And then we run like Hell from that {know-it-all} inner diva who dares to call herself the Truth. Humph! What does she know anyway?

Turns out, a lot!

After chatting with Dr. Jennifer Chrisman, a woman whose nurturing + healing energy far exceed her petite frame + soothing voice, I had a severely “Ah-Ha” moment.

She said: “Love your truth.”

********Screech … BREAKS … say, what?********

Seek your truth,” you got it!   “Honor your truth,” sure!   But “Love your truth?”
You. Are. Killing. Me.

You mean — I’ve  got to love the very thing that can turn our worlds upside down + inside out, wrecking havoc on relationships + careers + status quo? You got it!

Don’t get me wrong. I’m as BIG a supporter of Truth as the next gal. In fact, she’s ALWAYS been my own personal Travel Guide back to inner peace, passion, and purpose. It just so happens, I also tended to think of Truth as an utter royal nuisance. Which is why Jennifer’s concept of “loving” her came like a karate chop of goodness for my soul.

Jennifer, like Truth herself, will hear +  feel + see you — for who you really are. Her approach will feel:

:: Alarmingly comfortable,
:: Surprisingly soothing,
:: Collaboratively engaging, and …
:: Worth triple the investment!

I not only started to understand why I must *love* Truth as my #1 homegirl but, after talking for mere minutes, I completely forgot we’d only just met!

With wonderfully familiar energy, Jennifer welcomed me into her modern chic home {which had me drooling from its orchids to mason jars to sleek furnishings, FYI} and she related to me with a humor and a warmth I long to be around.

What is your truth? Love her today.
