Hi Karen. I signed up for your backstage pass and am interested in learning more about your coaching? I’m not a photographer but a graphic designer. I don’t want to keep doing contract jobs for companies I don’t care about. Would love to know how to transition to working with clients like you or others in lifestyle or fashion. Would coaching help me?
KarenDecember 17, 2012 - 9:50 pm
Hi Lucinda,
Absolutely coaching would help you!!! Until I worked with someone, it was hard to lock down exactly WHO my ideal clients/friends were to work with. I didn’t want to photograph just anyone anymore. And if this is what you’re also experiencing, then I’ve definitely been there and I’m happy to share several strategies for transitioning out of that exhausting cycle. Reach out via my contact form and we can talk about different options : )
I am BEYOND thrilled to announce that our labor of love, the documentary feature film The Other Shore, will have its World Premiere at SXSW film festival this 2013.
Less than 2% of all films submitted get into this prestigious {and RAD} film festival. So you can imagine our elation.
We’re kicking off the good news with the launch of the official movie FB page and Twitter profile. Come “LIKE” and Follow us for a behind the scenes look at the film team PLUS interactions with Diana AND production stills with updates on upcoming screenings rolling out this year! We’re just getting started so hop in and know there’s loads to come.
Had it not been for the tireless storytelling of Director, Timothy Wheeler, the phenomenal work of our Producers Kevin Abrams and Patrick Weir of Ketchum Labs, alongside Bristol Baughan and Erin Heidenreich of Uprise, the genius editing of Eric Meyerson, Sam Citron and Claire Didier, the gorgeous compositions by Paul Brill, and the courageous spirit of Diana Nyad’s epic journey — this film would not have been possible. There are countless people to thank. But for now, just trust me when I say that this team has every right to celebrate. As for me, I’m hugely grateful to have been a small part of this big story, photographing and co-producing this compelling examination of the human will.
Until we see you at SXSW, throw us a high five over here …
Love Love this photo and your website. I also love what you are doing to support women and Mom’s in poverty an incredibly noble cause. I personally began a cause in 2012 which has not taken off as, I would have liked to my goal in 2013 is to bring it to light and hopefully contribute to the organization, I started it for as well as create an event and add other charitable causes. I am letting go off procrastination in 2013 it’s a BIG GORILLA on my back & it’s time to stop it from weighing me down.
You are doing an amazing job and I am definitely a fan! You go girl!
KarenJanuary 31, 2013 - 12:37 am
Big thnx @Stephanie + @Elizabeth! Great to “meet” you both. @Elizabeth, good for you for taking on a cause in 2012 and for holding its vision strong still in 2013!!! We need more women like you! Dedication is what it always takes. And don’t worry. Nearly every creative gal I know deals with procrastination. So you’re in very talented company. LOL. You should check out my creative’s coaching. This is a topic we cover A LOT. ; )
For those of you who’ve been around these parts, or who’ve become a friend through a photo shoot or coaching, you know how *hugely* hugely *hugely* important women’s advocacy is to me. It’s really what drives everything I try to do and create, both on + off camera.
So when fellow creative entrepreneur, Katrina Padron, told me what she wanted to do to help support women {and moms} in poverty, I was honored to do whatever I could to help. Learn the story behind the story about the personal experience that inspired Katrina to give back in such a big way, bringing together the support of the biggest names in online business for A Giving Chance.
A Giving Chanceis an online drawing, with every dollar raised going to Compassion International’s Child Survival Program. Why? Because every day 1500 women die from complications in pregnancy and 10,000 newborns die within a month of birth, each and every day. With the necessary resources these tragedies could easily be prevented. It’s time we come together for women’s maternal health.
Katrina is sponsoring a Dream Team Business Makeover, with all entry donations going to Compassion International’ Child Survival Program which last year helped 25,000 babies stay alive. The contest will be celebrated with 2 winners receiving a Dream Team Business Makeover from 19 brilliant entrepreneurs. The business makeover team includes:
:: online powerhouse Copyblogger.com,
:: well known author and speaker Jonathon Fields,
:: Creating Fame founder Laura Roeder,
:: a Mini Editorial Branding Photo Shoot {from moi},
:: a new website,
:: fresh copy,
:: saavvy social media campaigns,
:: pr strategy,
:: one-on-one consulting with the biggest names in the industry,
:: copies of Seth Godin’s Bootstrappers Bible and What Matters Now,
:: PLUS so much more goodness {like, if you win so does your friend}!
The drawing begins now and runs through Christmas Eve with the winners being announced on Christmas Day. So hurry on over toA Giving Chanceto help support a mom in need and enter to win a whole new business this 2013. Make this next year not only the best for you but for a mom in need.

Today’s post is an extra special treat for me. It highlights everything I swoon and strive for in my own artist life:
:: vulnerability, strength, and raw unapologetic truth,
:: indie bohemian style, eclectic global details, texture,
:: vision boards, handwritten journals, postcards, passports,
:: wide open spaces, intimate home decor, nature and industry,
:: family stories, vintage records, old boots, heirloom photos.
AND this sneak showcases one of my absolute favorite soul’s on the planet. Meet my dear friend + extraordinary talent, singer songwriter Heather Stewart.
Not only does she effortlessly house a voice the likes of Brandi Carlile + Bonnie Raitt, but she may be the funniest and most charismatic person I know. A wicked combination of reflective, thoughtful, soul and untethered, wild, spirit — she’s that one friend we’d all invite to our private desert island.
I was beyond stoked to photograph the artwork for her upcoming “What It Is” album as well as her upcoming website’s rebrand. Like her herself, it’ll make you smile and sigh in awe. It’s with pure glee that I share this sneak of some of our favs, photographed near Melrose and near Venice, California.
To Heather’s unshakeable spirit and success: may she always live a life she loves.
Follow this massive talent on Twitter and FACEBOOK for album updates and a chance to see her perform live in Los Angeles.
These are sensational! I love too many to choose but definitely the first few with the jean jacket, the old records, the boots, those vision boards are really fun, the last few are so creative. Where did you get that mask? Do you use a prop house for photographers?
AnneOctober 11, 2012 - 6:44 pm
These are really sexy in the most natural way. I love literally everything.
CherylOctober 11, 2012 - 6:48 pm
Oooooh, the bedroom ones with the vintage albums rock! The first one is stunning.
SarahOctober 11, 2012 - 7:03 pm
Awesome wardrobe! She’s really photogenic in all of them. You can feel her emotions.

KarenOctober 11, 2012 - 8:11 pm
WOWZA! Look at all you sweet peeps! BIG HUGE GIANT virtual hugs for this. All I can say is “agreed.” @Tony, the mask is actually Heather’s. Amazing, right? @Ann, I said that too!!! @Cheryl, when she showed me her vintage record collection I was like “YES!” @Sarah, we pulled clothes from a bunch of options and I just loved the layers and textures and boho jewelry. Totally my style. @Kerry, we just might do that. Ha! @Leslie you’re hysterical! @Cami, so happy you hopped over here!!! Loved your tweet too ; ) Thnx everyone xo
LucianaOctober 11, 2012 - 11:43 pm
looove those! My favorite is #15 and the the 3rd from last. But all are gorgeous!
KarenOctober 11, 2012 - 11:49 pm
@Luciana I absolutely love #15 too! One of my favorites. We’re so likeminded. See you for brunch in the morning … Acai smoothies to come!
KarenOctober 12, 2012 - 3:02 pm
Someone on Facebook asked me last night about the jean jacket. I think her words were she’s “lusting” after it! Ha, ha! Funny thing is that’s actually pulled from my own closet. Bought it at one of my favorite little Marina Del Rey boutiques called Irene’s Story. Heather tried to steal it from me but I was like “hands off chica.” ; )
jim ortegaOctober 12, 2012 - 6:01 pm
These where very nicely done..i think they look great!
KarenOctober 12, 2012 - 6:10 pm

This past weekend, Dreads and I took a meditative long drive up the coast to visit our favorite Berkeley, CA crew. Our friends, Jaime + Jordan, shared their vows in an intimate garden wedding which struck such a chord with all of us, leaving me laughing through my tears. In the midst of shameless reception dance-offs, we all piled into the photo booth and got a little ca-razy. Here’s a sneak of the madness.
Truth be told — getting published on the top wedding blog, The Knotty Bride, is pretty much bizbomb.
Having a Ryan Gosling music video as its soundtrack? Priceless.
Peeps, this is a must watch.
Go. Run. Swoon. {see A+G and the hotness that is Gosling} Go here.

I just found you. LOVING your photography and your message. Inspiring!
KarenAugust 3, 2012 - 11:45 am
Hey @Laurel! Happy to have you here. Thnx so much and hope to “meet” soon! ; )
It’s no secret. Since I was 19 years old, fresh off the plane from NH, I’ve been blessed to work on so many incredible creative projects here in Los Angeles.
Producing for the Caine’s Arcade followup film, alongside the ridiculously talented producers/writers/directors Erin Heidenreich and Bristol Baughan of Uprise, has been no exception. Launching the Imagination Foundation and inviting the world out for a Global Cardboard Challenge this October 6th, I am thrilled to share with you Director Nirvan Mullick’s followup film. Featured on CBS News, The Jeff Probst Show, TIME Kids, and with OVER 1 million views — it’s kinda a big deal.
This film highlights all the magical opportunity that was born these past 5 months from the imagination of a 9-year-old boy, Caine, who built an elaborate cardboard arcade in his father’s East LA auto parts shop. From Jack Black, to LL Cool J, to Justin Timberlake, to Jessica Alba, to Annie Lennox, to Diane Sawyer, to the Caan Film Festival in France, to rocket scientist Rob Manning — the response has been HUGE!
DO THIS NOW: :: Share this with your friends + Come out to play next month on Oct 6th!
:: Leave a comment + tell me:
What memories does this bring up from YOUR childhood?
Do YOU think creative entrepreneurship will change the world?
Who inspires creativity and entrepreneurship in YOU?
And now … Caine’s Arcade 2! {Reload the page if video doesn’t appear}
Caine is a genius and true innovator. I know he’s going to leave a huge mark on this world. Thanks for sharing!
KarenSeptember 18, 2012 - 5:09 pm
Thnx for the comments! Nice to “meet” all of you! Be sure to check out *all* the other inspired works produced by the Uprise ladies {Bristol + Erin} at http://cargocollective.com/uprise Truly, you will be blown away. BLOWN AWAY. I am.
KarenSeptember 18, 2012 - 5:11 pm
@Stephanie, me too! @Tony, probably! Volunteers come out to help him from everywhere, wearing “staff” shirts! @Ethan, agreed. @Reuben, that he is! That he is!
KarenSeptember 20, 2012 - 7:38 pm
And don’t forget … go to http://www.cardboardchallenge.com to register your Oct 6 event for the Global Day of Play!!! Can’t wait to see what we all build and create ; )
Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just
your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything.
But think about if you added some great pictures or video clips to give your posts
more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics
and videos, this blog could definitely be one of the best in
its field. Wonderful blog!
Wow, superb blog format! How lengthy have you ever been blogging for?
you made running a blog glance easy. The whole glance of your website is wonderful, let alone the content
material!
:: We hear the whisper,

And then we run like Hell from that {know-it-all} inner diva who dares to call herself the Truth. Humph! What does she know anyway?
Turns out, a lot!
After chatting with Dr. Jennifer Chrisman, a woman whose nurturing + healing energy far exceed her petite frame + soothing voice, I had a severely “Ah-Ha” moment.
She said:“Love your truth.”
********Screech … BREAKS … say, what?********
“Seek your truth,” you got it! “Honor your truth,” sure! But “Love your truth?”
You. Are. Killing. Me.
You mean — I’ve got to love the very thing that can turn our worlds upside down + inside out, wrecking havoc on relationships + careers + status quo? You got it!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m as BIG a supporter of Truth as the next gal. In fact, she’s ALWAYS been my own personal Travel Guide back to inner peace, passion, and purpose. It just so happens, I also tended to think of Truth as an utter royal nuisance. Which is why Jennifer’s concept of “loving” her came like a karate chop of goodness for my soul.
Jennifer, like Truth herself, will hear + feel + see you — for who you really are. Her approach will feel:
:: Alarmingly comfortable,
:: Surprisingly soothing,
:: Collaboratively engaging, and …
:: Worth triple the investment!
I not only started to understand why I must *love* Truth as my #1 homegirl but, after talking for mere minutes, I completely forgot we’d only just met!
With wonderfully familiar energy, Jennifer welcomed me into her modern chic home {which had me drooling from its orchids to mason jars to sleek furnishings, FYI} and she related to me with a humor and a warmth I long to be around.
What is your truth? Love her today. Don’t Be Shy! Connect with Dr. Jennifer Chrisman & Fall in Love:

photography + past happy clients are featured in the LA Times!
You gotta love when random awesomeness falls out of the sky!
Last week, The LA Times contacted me about wanting to feature one of my wedding clients for a profile article on …
California Newlyweds, Latest Bridal Makeup Trends + What’s Popular for 2012.
Obvious to say, I was like “uh, hmmm, YUP! Sounds good!”
Without hesitation, I immediately thought of my sweet new friends Alison + Gabe. Within a few hours, the reporter had a warm chat with the duo and away we went.
Here’s what was published in today’s Sunday Edition of the LA Times. {NOTE: this is featured in the Image Section! Brides check it out.}
If you’ve recently gotten engaged this past Valentine’s Day, hop over to my “Say Hola” Form and submit an inquiry. I’d love to hear all about your dream day and help you predesign your wedding photography plus coordinate your day’s timeline!
We book out 6-12 months in advance and shoot a very limited number of weddings per year. So if you’re engaged, let’s chat it up sooner rather than later. Congrats, friends! xo

I’ve been asked this before and it always makes me smile. Amazingly, these beautiful women and little ones are NOT models. But since I work with so many top actors for Headshots, many of them have gone on to submit headshots for national agencies representing maternity – children with a little guidance from me. In fact, one past client {a friend who herself actually is a dancer/actress} has had tremendous success with her little baby girl. You can see her daughter in Targets Advertisements everywhere! Point is, no one should shy away from taking portraits. The right lighting, mood, wardrobe, makeup, and body placement can make anyone feel, even look, like a model for a day! Even the least photogenic people leave with gorgeous shots and having had a wonderful time ; )
KarenOctober 8, 2010 - 11:04 am
CONGRATULATIONS to Holly, Aaron, and big sister Ava on the birth of their new baby girl! She came into the world last night, October 7th, at 10:54pm!!! I can’t wait to meet her!

Super Amaaaazing work! I looked through this once and then I looked it all over again! Just loved it! Truely beautiful!
Such GORGEOUS WORK!!!! The composition, the creativity and the love for your subjects shines through! My favorite is the sexy sprinkle that all your pics have, it’s such and earthy sexiness, not over the top, but really magnetic. Great work!
Hey Karen, as someone who has just found out she’s pregnant, I am absolutely thrilled and sooo inspired by these beautiful pictures. All I can say is ‘WOW!’ and wish you were living in Europe to do a session with me later on! (hint hint: don’t want to travel here?)
KarenJuly 13, 2011 - 12:41 pm

@Sabine, Congratulations! You know, The Hot Dreadman {aka the fiance} and I were just taking about how we could prioritize a Europe trip. Maybe your belly is that reason!!! Seriously, submit a contact form. I travel all over creation and if you can get 3-5 friends or family members to also book a Family, Maternity, Baby, Boudoir, Editorial, Engagement, Wedding, or Trash the Dress shoot within a 1-2 week period that I’m there for you — we can offset the travel expenses. ; )
Peeps outside of CA, this goes for you too! Just get a few friends to book around the same time and I can fly just about anywhere.
P.S. I think I’ll be in NYC from Oct 13-23, 2011 so get on my NYC list by submitting a Contact Form. xoxo
