The Real Question Behind “What Should I Wear?”

WHEN IT’s NOT ABOUT THE SHOES:
Nearly the #1 question all my women photography subjects ask me is, “What should I wear in my photo shoot?” And the funny thing is, this is the ONE time when their question is actually NOT about the shoes. Crazy, I know. Here’s the scoop.

Truth is: We women really ask this question because we want to feel reassured that “we” will look as skinny, as cool, as sexy and as happy as all those “other” brides and moms (and models) look in the style blogs and the inspiration shoots we’ve obsessed over … for years! It’s that aspiration that we brides and moms and women are all after. We want to feel special and pretty and fashionable and in love — not only on the shoot day but in the months afterwards when we share the images on FACEBOOK and maybe even when we get published (fingers crossed)!

Of course there is a real skill and talent to styling wardrobe (and props/details) for photo shoots. And this absolutely CANNOT get overlooked. Hands down, and I’ll say this over and over, it is as much a wedding or a portrait photographer’s job to help style wardrobe as it is to shoot clean light, compose the best angles, and edit the images in Lightroom or Photoshop. Your clients are coming to you to make them look and feel not only their best but blog-worthy best.

The point of this post is simply to remind photographers that many of our clients actually already know EXACTLY what they want to wear. How? Because they know already how they want to look, how they want to feel, and who they want to be. After all – we women make secret jobs out of Pinterest and keep stacks n’ stacks of Anthropologie catalogs on our night stand! We know what we want. We just need help confirming we can embody it.

So this question, “what should I wear?” is really not about the shoes at all. It’s almost always a question about “will I like how I look?” and “will I like how I feel?”

When you’ve answered that, then you can dive into all the fun details of outfits and accessories that photograph best and what’s their signature style or brand!
